Arkady Gips: touring with Madonna
Arkady Gips, 52, has played the violin since he was 3, but he never thought that his career in folk and classical music would lead him to Madonna's world tour.
Gips, who moved from his native Ukraine to Columbus in 1993, was personally selected by Madonna for her 12-piece band on her worldwide Sticky&Sweet tour, which began Aug. 25.
Gips' sister, Mira Axelrud, who also lives in Columbus, said the tour is going well.
"He played for around 40,000 people the other night. He usually plays for audiences of 15,000, tops."Axelrud described her brother as a "big Madonna fan" and said that he has found the pop singer to simply be "very nice."
Gips' background is grounded in Russian Gypsy music. Madonna's tour is divided into four sections: pimp, old school, Gypsy and rave.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for my brother," said Axelrud, who hears from Gips almost every day. "This chance is huge."
